I can't stand running in the gym. Treadmill hurts my knees and and I hate running in place. I can easily do the eliptical or the stationary bike in there. What one is better?

I opt for the elliptical only for the recipricol movement of the extremities and it's easier on your joints

Well it depends on your form, I feel lit works my calvs and hamstrings very well. Also it's easier for me to burn calories on either the eliptical or the stairmaster. I know that is relative to the intensity of the workout, but I pretty much have to max out the bikes resistance to get 500+ calories in half an hour.

i'd say eliptical because a)you're moving more body parts arms (arms & legs vs. legs) and b)you're muscles have the added requirement of supporting you keeping you upright.'

that being said, at the gym, I can't stand any of that shit, so I just sit on a horizontal bike doing the hill program with a good book for 30-45min and get my HR up to around 140-150

Have you never seen an elliptical?

I think you have it backwards?

To the OP - I love both. I HATE the treadmill, and honestly can't get into running.. however, the elliptical and stationary are great. I also love road and mountain biking as well. GREAT cardio.

I usually alternate between both. Bike one day, elliptical the next. Probably my faves, I've never been much for treadmills. Haven't been on a stairmaster for a while, I may not use one again because for some reason it seems boring now. :dunno:

riding the bike hurts my nuts...

the stairmaster is great if you crank the resistance up.

Recumbant ( i can't spell, i know) bike or eliptical. I'd rather ride the bike, but if they're all taken, I'll hop on the eliptical.

i hate running too just like everyone else. You just have to man up and do it. I alternate though between cardio by running suicides before playing bball, elliptical, or upright stationary bike. Just switch up what you do and you won't get so burnt out on cardio alltogether.

    Go with the elliptical.

Stationary bike sucks. When back was hurting I decided to do that since it was really the only thing I could do at the time. 30min later I had burned like 160 cals :ugh:

30min on the elliptical usually nets me a good 350-375 cals.

as absolute numbers go, I wouldn't trust the calorie counters as far as I can throw'em. as relative measurements though, I find them pretty useful

Well, I do not use them to necessarily measure MY burned calories, but more of a comparison between the two machines. At my gym the stationary bike, treadmill, and elliptical are all made by the same company. So I assume, while their calorie counters might not accurately reflect what I am burning, I can use them as a means of comparison of which burns more. In my experience the treadmill and elliptical burn the same at similar resistances, and the stationary bike is WAY behind. I feel like I burn more cals shooting around a basketball for 15min than 20min on a stationary bike.

Just gotta be careful not to just go through the motions with the stationary bike and eliptical. It is really easy with both.
