I have a electronic scale that does weight and BF %. You input your height, age, and sex before it weighs you. Then it gives you your BF%. Are these scales accurate??

It told me I have 21% BF??? I'm a fatass :wtc:

Those are as unaccurate as it can get. A mirror measures ur BF better.

Aren't they accurate in relative terms? I.e if you're 21% today, measure tm at the same time/ under the same conditions and you'll be 21% again. This way you can track progress.

Same conditions is hard to replicate, though. Same amount of water retention, same amount of food and shit in your system, etc.

I don't personally put much faith in them.

Consider the input data, then output data. Is it rational to assert that you can tell me your height and weight, and I can tell you a bfi through the interweb?

that's not how they work though, they use bioelectrical impedance.

It is on the lower end of the normal range for women. I actually think most American woman probably rank much higher than that which is a sad statement on our culture.

I don't think the electronic measurement scale is accurate. Even the pinch test is flawed. The best form of measurement for body fat is underwater from what I have heard.

There was a post once with pictures of a guy that must have been in 5-9% rang in BF but the scale said 22%. They are so off. Calipers for 20 bucks>BF Scale

Ya, that is what I always tell people. If you use it first thing in the morning right after voiding any waste, it will be pretty consistant (although inaccurate), which is good for tracking progress. However, even then I would take it with a grain of salt.

those are factors in the calculation as well, of course they will change the readout. Try it next time with your socks on, it won't work.

I've been having the same guy at my gym do my BF% with calipers every week since I started, I started at about 38% and now i'm about 6.5% or so, now personally I don't think i'm at 6.5% BF... i've seen pics of guys who really are that low and there's no way i'm there, but since i've been having it checked every week since I started I was able to track my progress, even though the results are inaccurate. Who knows though, mabye I really am at 6.5% but I just don't look like it because i've still got a lot of loose skin which is paper thin which may throw off the results.

    :dunno:

I wish I could find a place with one of those hydrostatic displacement tubs to get my true BF%.

umm... they usually have a list of people they do not work for. just a FYI. There usually is the exception that it will not work for broly's & distance runners... they are build for average joe & shmoe

and of course it wouldnt' work with your socks on. That's like saying try to start a car without a battery.

i just did a bio lab today where we used hand held bioimpedence ones, two different brands.

i tried athlethic build and normal build, 5'6'' and tried 145 to 150 lbs, mulitple tries on each machine.

    my readings were 6-9%

i don't know if they numbers are true, but the numbers are pretty consistant, so that would be good to compare and track your self.
