I imposed my will on someone tonight with the good old g-n-p, been working on my clench strategy, it worked pretty good tonight. waded through his attacks, clenched, threw em on the mat, got knee on belly and dropped a few shots, then took mount and proceeded to get busy with teh elbows. :bigthumb:

I love the freedom of MMA sparring. "I don't feel like kicking you in the head today. here, get on the mat and eat elbows for a while."

lol, awesome. if its just sparring though, elbows might be too much?? i dunno, i remember i accidentally hit a kid with my elbow while sparring(going for back fist, but he moved in) and i split his forehead open. it wasnt even that hard.

and so begins my rant about elbows...

i don't like elbows in fights. too many fights are stopped because of cuts rather than the unability to fight

ok, that was it for my rant actually

I used to feel the same way, but they are just too effective to ignore.

now UFC just needs to start allowing knees to the head on the ground.

You can throw forearms instead. much safer

yeah, but then there's a gray area between elbows and forearms, and crossfacing and throwing 'bows, etc. i would like to see at least forearms too, but elbows will inevitably be dropped if forearms are allowed

they're effective looking because they can open up the eye really easily, but it's not a good indicator of not being able to fight because you have a nasty gash

I agree. For sport fighting, blood in the eyes isn't the way I want to see a fight end.

doctor stoppages are always damn anti-climactic. i hate them almost as much as ending fights due to exhaustion

I don't like the stoppages but I do like that they allow the elbows. It is just another thing fighters must learn to adapt their style to. I think the ufc feels that it gives the good traditional wrestlers a weapon to finish the fight instead of riding someones guard around the ring for 15 minutes. I tend to agree. I wish the knees to the head were allowed as well. I don't think rules should influence fighting styles, but instead the lack of protective rules should influence fighting styles. As real as possible while being safe enough to be called sport. That should be the goal of any mma organization.

When they stop it in the UFC they need to go to the score cards instead of automatically giving the other guy the win.

I'm on the fence with the cut thing.

On one hand it is anti climactic and sorta sucks, but on the other... in a real fight, a bad cut like that would more than likely end a fight, if guy can't see or loses enough blood, he will lose. So it is a pretty valid technique.

But of course if Couture/Belfort II was a real street fight, Vitor wouldn't be wearing a pair of Quano gloves to cut Randy's eyelid as he did.

yeah I do also kinda hate to see an early stoppage by cut, but it is, as they say, a definitive attempt to end the fight.

but they can very well be a premature end to the fighter's actual ability to continue otherwise
