I don't really like the EF-S line, but if this fucker proves to be any good, I will get it.
And the Tamron 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 to compliment it.

    What's the estimated street price? If it's a constant f/2.8, that'll be nice > 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM

    It is constant f/2.8.
I've glanced over a few FM.com threads, and it could be as high as $1,100.

    Fucking expensive though.
    It's also a 17-50mm f/2.8G IS, which could be Canon's EF-S L line.
    :dunno:

its a niece piece of glass that's for sure..however im honestly not sure how useful will VR be at that range..seems VR is better for longer lenses, still I like it a lot.

IS on the 24-105L IS seems to give you like 2 1/2 stops of handholdability at 1.5mm, and about 2 stops at 24mm.
So, I reckon you'll get about 2 stops from the 17-55mm.
That, plus constant f/2.8, plus short focal lengths (slower shutter needed for steady shots), plus good ISO1600-3200 performance (as found on all current Canon DSLR) gives you an excellent low-light lens.
SOmeone FM did the math work, and at 17mm, it equals to 17mm f/1, though with more DoF (obviously), and probably sharper too.

It's way too expensive though. I mean, $1,100? For an EF-S lens? With a cheap plastic lens barrel? And no red stripe?
This lens better be outstanding optically to warrant such a price.
I mean, you can buy the 24-105mm f/4L IS for like $1,100 now.

It's unlikely Canon will drop the EF-S mount anytime soon.

    Unlikely.
It's gonna be crop factor for amateurs and enthusiasts, and FF for professionals, and loaded enthusiasts.

    1.3x factor's getting dropped though.
1D MkIIn is the last 1.3x crop camera from Canon.

Because even if FF is cheap overall, 1.6x will still be cheaper. It also segments the market. :hsughno:
