I was looking around at cars, and noticed that for their age, they are pretty damned cheap in CA. Good, bad? Things specifically to look for?

Nice cars if in good condition.
Head bolt torque is too low, so they are somewhat susceptible to BHG.

Stock turbo [CT26] isn't good for a whole lot of power, though it is a reliable turbo.
If you do remove it you can sell it to the Alltrac/MR2 guys as an upgrade.
Not worth that much $$ though.
Depending on condition probably $150 or so.

84-89 300ZX Turbos are cheaper and better. The MKIIIs have head gasket issues and are tanks...

definitely tanks, the 7m is a good motor and with stock internals can make 400hp+, has only an oil pan flaw.

I own a 88 mkiii. Great car but mine is far from stock. 1jz with single and silkroad coilovers. Also completely stripped with 1 bride seat. Stock, I didnt like the car so much but the 7m does have a few free mods that can get you around 250-260rwhp. The 7m head gasket problem comes from toyota not torquing it enough. If you use a metal head gasket and some arp bolts, your set to go. Or you can do like me and just swap a 1jz in. Which of course is a far superior engine imo.

I'm eventually going to get a 240z, but I need something in the mean time that is more reliable/fun than my current '94 A4.

icntspl, how much do they weigh when you strip them? And link to free mods?

Watch out for the poomotor's tendency to blow headgaskets.

Best bet would be to pick up a JZA70 (what is with your american's and calling them mark "whatever") with the 1JZGTE - or do an engine swap.

Other than that, they're kinda heavy and the 7M is a bit of a POS if not taken care of.

that is very true. On Supraforums a random flame war will start because a MKIV owner will say something bad about a MKIII and then all hell breaks loose. There was a pretty good picture thread on there a while ago with funny pictures about it

    "mark" for generation of vehicle.

1JZ powered cars were never sold in the US.

I'm picking this up for the 'its cheap now but I can upgrade later' factor, so getting the 2.5TT is out for awhile :o

In other news, I'm even more interested in dumping my current car after spending a good part of today just trying to replace the goddamn fuel pump :madfawk:

mkiii supra crew? i got one, i love it but i cant even drive it....

the only real problems are the BHG and Knock(when owners down flush there oil good after a bhg)... if you get the hg problem, fix it right the first time, mhg, arp studs..and make sure your oil is clean...after that you shouldnt have many problems...

or go 1jz, the only problem with that is laying off the gas...=p

i plan on going 1jz in the late spring

this is the way to go find a rolling shell then swap a 1jz into it and when you spin a bearing or melt a piston swap the 2jz block in and call it a night.

    <- 1.5jz sc300

MKIII's are tight. They are just so damn heavy. Throw a 1JZ in it, and strip the fuck out of it. now we are talkin. My bro has a 1JZ + MKIII. hes got the suspension down (stance coilovers, full roll cage, etc..) You need to control tossin around that kind of weight
