I'd like to build a 14.5" AR-15 (or possibly just buy a complete rifle, I haven't decided yet). Is this the proper way to obtain one? I live in Texas:

If I decide to BUILD an SBR:
    1. Purchase Lower
    2. Fill out paperwork by going to http://www.atf.gov/dcof/:
      • Fill out F 1 (5320.1) - Application to Make and Register a Firearm
      • Fill out F 5330.20 - Certificate of Compliance With 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)
      • Fingerprint card FBI FD-258LE - NFA, Imports ORI DCATF0100
    3. Send in paperwork with $200 money order + CLEO signature + passport photos and wait up to 4 months
    4. Have receiver engraved once stamp comes in with:
      • Name
      • Street Address
      • Caliber (if it's not on the receiver already)
    5. Purchase 14.5" upper and build the rifle
    6. Have fun shooting!
If I decide to BUY an SBR:
    1. Purchase the AR-15 from the dealer. Pay for it in full but have them hold it since I don't have a stamp yet.
    2. Have the dealer send me the serial # of the rifle
    4. Send in paperwork with $200 money order + CLEO signature + passport photos and wait up to 4 months
    5. Send proof of approval/photocopy of stamp to the dealer
    6. Have the rifle shipped to my FFL
    7. Pickup rifle from my FFL and again, show proof of SBR approval/stamp
    8. Have receiver engraved ASAP with:
      • Name
      • Street Address
      • Caliber (if it's not on the receiver already)
    9. Have fun shooting!
Really, I think my questions are with buying the complete rifle more than anything. How much time do I have to get the receiver engraved after I take ownership of it? Do I have to have my full street address on it or just the city and state?

Seems I only need the Name, City, and State according to this site:

    http://orion-arms.com/new/content/view/26/84/

So now the only question is, how soon do I have to get it engraved? If I move to a neigboring city, what happens?

Good call. If I buy a complete rifle, then I really don't have a choice, right?

Also, you need to consider doing a LLC or Trust. They are a bit of money (depending if you get a lawyer or not), but if you have a spouse or ever plan on it you need to think about it. Technically your spouse can't even know the combo to the safe or she is in violation of the BATFE statutes

There's no official letter that says that. I know of people that have a 'husband and wife' trust and either of them use it. Paperwork goes into the ATF like that, you'd think that if they had a problem with it, they wouldn't approve it.

And getting your lower engraved, check local machine shops. I got mine done for $15 on a brand new CNC machine, it looks great.

it just depends on the state laws and how the trust is setup

    edit:

Say you have yourself as the trustee and your wife as a beneficiary, from what i gather that still is a no go. you'd both have to be trustee's but you have to start spending cash to get a lawyer to do it right

http://www.orion-arms.com/new/ is who BARFCOM reommends and who I will be using for my SBR

While machine shops can do it, search through the NFA subforum on BARF and you will see many disasters from them :hs:

I had mine engraved with name city and state. I also had it done long before my stamp came in.

On a side note. I think this should be a sticky as it is very accurate in the process for building or buying an class III firearm.

    Didn't read whole thread, but:

LOWER DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ENGRAVED IF IT IS TRANSFERED INTO YOUR NAME AS A SBR.

dude, if you're going to get a SBR go 12" or less

14.5, you might as well perm a flash hider on it and save yourself 200 bux

I've been doing a lot of reading on different barrel sizes. All I've ever shot are 16" and 20". I think I'm going to go with the 10.5" or 11.5" after reading some reviews on them (with and without suppressors).
