Probably going to be my next rifle. Eventually I'd like two, a 16" socom stlye one and a longer accurate one. Dont know which one I want first, probably a wooden stock accuratized m1a.

I'd like to keep it under 2k, far under 2k if possible, but I have time to look. How are the polytech ones?

As gay as it sounds i started liking them after blackhawk down :o

How are they expensive to maintain? I can get over the cost of 308.

Bedding has to be redone on it after about a 800-1000rds. Easy to screw up the crown on them (have to clean from the muzzle), gas tube/gas piston needs to be maintained like crazy and replaced every so often, less barrel life, etc...

Platform was always difficult to mount a scope well. If you plan to run iron sights only I guess it's a non issue.

Would rather have a good AR-10 or even a Fal.

Yep, chicom is actually closer to milspec than what Springfield offers, plus receivers are forged not cast.

If you opt to go the .308 AR route the DPMS LR-308's have always run well for me. They offer many different models from the AP4 which is a .308 M4gery to a 24" bull bbl'd version and everything in between.
