EDU: Guide to tanning EDIT 1/21/09. ADDED HP BEDS AND INDOOR VS. OUTDOOR

Okay, i noticed that a lot of you constantly have questions about tanning and it's mostly the fitness subforum since you fags :greddy: go tanning to make your muscles look bigger. :mamoru:

EDIT: Added more stuff about different types of beds:

    HP(High Pressure) Beds:

    LOTIONS:

These are my personal favorite lotions. Are are pretty cheap and some are expensive. I recommend buying on EBAY. It's MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper on ebay as apposed to in the salon.

Put the lotion on before you climb into the tanning bed.

I personally recommend Designer Skin. I love their stuff, it's higher end with better results and leaves your skin soft and smooth.

Australian Gold is not bad..but a lot of their lotions give off a really bad ATO (after tanning odor).

Another good one is California Tan. It's also expensive, but good stuff.

Yes, i realize most of these have :greddy: names. If it makes you feel better, wrap the bottle in duct tape so that noone sees the names of the lotion.

    BEGINNER/MAXIMIZER LOTIONS:

    Australian Gold - "Promised"
One of my favorites actually, doesnt give off ATO.

    Swedish Beauty - "Chocolate Silk"
    An Aloe-based lotion. Works well.

    California Tan - "Ionyx Maximizer"
You can use this one after you build a base tan, it helps you get darker.

Supre - "SMOKE HEMP Tan Maximizer"
This one always gets me super dark. It's tingle and bronzer free
    [IMG]

    TINGLES:

    Designer Skin - "Shrine"
One of the milder tingle lotions. It's a tingle and a bronzer lotion. Works GREAT!

California Tan - Hempology Hot Maximizer
Once again, Bronzer and a Maximizer
    It's a light-medium tingle
Hempology Hot Maximizer conjures up red-hot darkness with Hemp Elixir, a potent blend of virgin hemp seed oil and hemp butter and devilish Hot Action
    [IMG]

    California Tan-"Pyro"
    Level 15 tingle
    [IMG]

    R Sun- "OC-Out of control"
THE HOTTEST tingle i have ever used.
Tingle Factor 40+ 3 Out of Control Tingle Agents - including the highest level of Benzyl Nicotinate, Increase your micro-circulation for the Darkest Tan Results. 4x Bronzer - depth of color is enhanced with DHA, Walnut Extract, Erythrulose, and Control Release Agents. Anti-Cellulite/Skin Firming
    [IMG]

    BRONZERS:

    Designer Skin - "Spellbound"
I absolutly LOVE this one. It has silicone in it which leaves your skin super soft. It also makes you pretty dark without streaking.

California Tan - "Ambrosia Dark Delux"
    Dark bronzers, good smell.

California Tan - "Hempology Bronzing Maximizer"
    Really Good Stuff!

    California Tan - "Dark Thrill"
Dark Tan Boosters Intoxicating ExoticBlend with Triple Bronzer. Immediate bronzer results, advanced tanning
    [IMG]

    Supre - "Smoke Black Bronzer"
This is honestly the DARKEST bronzer i have ever tried. Don't try it unless you already have a nice tan. Otherwise you will streak.

tingle cream just causes photosensitivity...won't really help you tan

check the ingredients...its just photosensitizers + menthol, mint or eucalyptus to create that cooling tingling feeling (which do nothing for your skin beyond acting as irritants btw)

if you really want a natural looking tan find something with

DHA and caffeic acid phenethyl ester as well as erythrulose. it is impossible to get a patchy, orange tan with this combo.

there's also creams coming out soon that contain forskolin which increases cAMP which mimics a real tan as opposed to staining it (like DHA and erythrulose)

How do tingling lotions work? Most manufacturers of tingle products state that the active ingredient stimulates microcirculation as a means of enhancing the tanning process. Since microcirculation is defined as the flow of blood in the entire system of smaller vessels (100 microns or less in diameter) of the body, tingle ingredients must increase the flow of blood in the small blood vessels (the microvascularature) that are the closest to the surface of the skin.
But how do they really work? Any substance that irritates the skin can cause an increase in the microcirculation in the blood vessels closest to the skin. Both an increase or a decrease in temperature and friction (rubbing) also can increase blood flow to the skin. The most common cause is a topically-applied substance and this includes the application of a tingle lotion product. If the tingling action takes place in the absence of light, the substance is classified as an irritant, and if light is required to cause the reaction, it is classified as a photoirritant. In most cases, this latter definition is correct in the case of tingle lotions

yeah...so they're either photosensitizers or irritants like i said...

it'd probably be more effective, on the basis on increasing microcirculation (which really has nothing to do with tanning), to take niacin before tanning.

    does it? :o:hsd:

increasing oxygen won't oxidize melanin the same way UVA does

    it wont,

but it increases circulation thus bringing more oxygen up to the skin..causing you to tan. It's mostly used to get darker when you are stuck

Tingle formula increases blood flow and tanning cell activity · Rapid Tan UV amplifying formula with Tyrosine

increasing oxygen levels near or around the skin won't affect your tanning in a large way...since it's limit dependent on the melanin not the oxygen which it can bind to.

this tanning "plateau" is mostly likely caused by the fact that pyrimidine dimers formed by UVB damage can take over 72 hours to induce melanin production in the skin.

there's no point repeating what the manufacturers tell you because their statements aren't backed up by science...

putting tyrosine on your skin won't increase melanin production either, even though it is a rate-limiting step...it has been shown to increase melanin production in vitro, but that doesn't occur in vivo.

yes, i already mentioned that in my EDU about the 72 hours. ..

it doesnt effect it in a large way, but it deffinatly helps.

i am walking proof that tingle works and i know many people will back me up.
