    1. Open File
    2. File -->
    3. File Info
    4. Go to "Advanced"
    5. Expand the "http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/" section
    6. look or "ImageNumber"

    in CS3:

    or CS4:

    Note: This was for a Nikon D300 and I think it works for most nikons, I've heard that canon cameras other than the 5D,1D may not work like this.

    Doesn't seem to work for the XTi.. I have the "aux:ImageNumber:", however it says 64, and I've gone through a full 9999 and am back at 100.

    It doesnt work on a lot of Canon cameras. 1D and 1DII bodies you can find it out but its not that easy. I think 20D and earlier models you can find it out this way though.

    I'm honestly not sure of the answers to these questions. It probably does work with JPG if it's the original file straight of the card.

    If not just snap a raw pic and open it up in PS to check your count occasionally.

    I know some, if not most cameras only have a 4 digit counter for images (the reason you go from 9999 to 1....)

    I believe the d300 has a 5+ digit counter....

    So for those of us who only get 4 digits, you may have to add 10k to that number....

    but it's pretty cool, nonetheless...

    Looks like my D70s topped out at 54,973. That was the last photo I took before it broke.

    "Shutter count": #of times the shutter has been actuated on your camera. Canon claims theirs are good for at least 50,000. I don't know if Nikon makes any claims... basically like asking how many miles are on that '97 Honda Accord.
