    http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtests/2009/11/big-list-of-fuel-economy-october-2009.html

    The BMW m3 gets 20.7 best, 10.8 worst with a 17.3 average

And thats with its "high tech smaller capacity engine" which is fucking expensive to build and delivers lower numbers than a LS3.

The cheap to make and buy Camaro ss does 23.1 best, 13.1 worsst and a 17.3 average, exactly the same average as the BMW m3 worth over twice as much, and the Pontiac G8 is averaging 18 with a 24 best.

The other imports, the 370Z, averaging 18.4 from its NVH nightmare v6 in a much lighter bodyshell and the anemic Audi S5 with its powerless and torqueless wonder 4.2L engine averages 16.2, even the charger R/T gets 16.6, and chrysler make about the worst cars in the world.

The MazdaSpeed 3 and Evo X average 20.1 and 17 respectively, the Evo is even worse than the v8's, from a little 4 cylinder and the Mazda is a light car and hardly offers comparable performance.

so in reality, the cheap, "old technology" pushrod LS engines, are using less fuel, while being cheaper to build and maintain AND provide more power and a better torque curve in heavier vehicles.

Nice going rest of the world.

Seems pretty unscientific to me. Who drove them, where were they driven, how were they driven, and how was the fuel economy figures calculated? Treating these numbers like dogma would be foolish. Trend-wise, coming to the conclusion that american cars arent as bad as toyota wants you to think they are is not surprising to me at all. Engines dont care how the valves go up and down. Quality combustion is all that matters, so it doesnt matter that an LS1 has pushrods or something else has DOHC 5 valves per cyl with VVT.

People who own M3s, S5s and Evos aren't gonna give a fuck about gas mileage.

Nice going threadstarter. You just made a shit post.

It's not what you drive, it's how you drive.

I just got 15.8mpg on my last tank of gas in my RX-8, so I'm really in no position to criticize anyone right now. :p

You wanna know something? If we gave a shit about gas mileage, we'd be driving a Prius.

its simple showing that old technology, engines that provide superior power curves can also get better fuel economy.

I'd be doing better if I could resist the nearly-constant urge to redline it over and over again. Revving to 9000rpm is very similar to shooting PCP.

It also has a lot to do with my daily commute. I used to DD a Passat with an engine that could top 30mpg on the highway, and I still only got 17mpg driving to/from work every day.

I managed to not get my EZ-Pass out fast enough this morning and I had to stop and wait at the toll booth while my credit card got rung up. A couple cars back the guy got impatient and went around through the next booth just as I got my card back and the gate opened. I peeled out of the gate like I hated my tires (actually, I do hate them) and even though he started out a good 25mph faster than me because he had a rolling start, I still ended up in front of him. He was so pissed. :fawk:

They'd be pretty pointless too. If you don't like the styling, then swapping in the LS would also remove the unique engine and 50/50 weight balance as selling points, leaving it as a fast 2+2 pseudo-coupe, i.e. nothing special.

The GXP averages 18-20mpg overall. Unless my foot is in it.

thats awesome really, no LS1 ive ever owned has gotten close to that, and thats a LS3.

I find most LS1 Commodores will average 16 MPG ish unless you baby the fuck out of them, and get alot worse if driven hard.
