I was reading through the archives and had a question on one of the threads (it's locked now so I can't ask in there).
It is about eating before excercising.
What types of food do I want to eat before I excercise? I always thought it was best to excercise on an empty stomach and I always seem to get nauseous if I eat or drink too much before excercising?
    Thanks!

Can you explain this a little more?
Also what are some good examples of carbs and protein to eat before hand? Do you just eat a small amount?

I don't think that would be such a good idea, especially if you are working your abs or doing cardio

This totally depends on you, your body and the type of exercise.

I like to have a small (100-200 calorie) protein and carb snack an hour or two before lifting.

Before my runs- if it's sub 6 miles, I don't usually eat anything because I'll get nauseous. If it's a longer run, I drink gatorade; for a very long run and/or race, a bagel or poptarts an hour or two pre-event.

For a short while I was having half a zone bar before I went to the gym but now I'm back to working out on an empty stomach. I'll drink some BCAA's during the workout though.

She's also a girl :o I doubt she needs 400-500 calories worth of carbs and protein before a workout.

I know I don't know half that. :o I also still don't have a clue what BCAA is either (not that I have the need for what it probably is).

well you COULD take 2 seconds and type it into google, which would provide you with a wealth of information on BCAA's. But it stands for Branched Chain Amino Acids, which are leucine, isoleucine and valine. Of all the amino acids that make up protein, these are the most important in regards to muscle synthesis. A BCAA product like xtend are these aminos in free form. Since they are not peptide bonded with other amino acids into proteins, they can be put to use by your body without the need to be broken down first, thus, more quickly, which is helpful during your workout.

I COULD have done that... but like I said I figured it was something I don't really need anyways. I'm not into the whole powders and shakes and supplements thing.

it may actually be good for you, because drinking BCAA's pre and during workout can negate some of the catabolic effects of working out on a completely empty stomach, but at the same time, it is a very light , water-like drink (like crystal lite or koolaid) so you'd probably be able to handle it without feeling any of the nausea you get from eating before you work out.

Interesting. Maybe I will have to do a google search on it and find out a little more. Thanks!

btw when i say it's like koolaid, i'm referring specifically to xtend. i get the watermelon flavor. bulk BCAA's taste REALLY bad by themselves, and i hear some other products don't taste so great either. So i'd definitely recommend xtend from Scivation.
