Given a $40 price advantage towards the Q6600, which one would you go with? General use, some CAD work and a little gaming.

Also, anyone have recommendations for a good motherboard with a second x8 or x16 PCIe slot(x4 electrical is okay, just need a physical x8 slot for a RAID card)? I'd rather stick with an Intel chipset. Supermicro has a couple boards that look promising, but I dont see a point in buying DDR3 right now.

EDIT: 2nd PCIe slot can't be adjacent to the main x16 slot or my 8800GTS will cover it up.

Price advantage? They are both the same price on Newegg.

I just built a computer for pretty much what you are, just general school use and for AutoCAD C3D. I went with the 8500 because of the extra speed and the fact that there are only one or two things in AutoCAD that are multi-threaded.

Local chain has a special running. I use mainly SolidWorks which is multithreaded but I'm not sure how much two extra cores will help. I'm sticking with XP for a while.

You'll find that more and more apps are being ported to multi-threading/ parallelism for larger amounts of speed now these days. Especially with the Q6600's 8mb of L2

Goto 2cpu.com and read some of the tests, there is point at which currently, apps start to see no performance gain and that's around the 6 cpu area... 8 is almost nothing except for HPC and video editing/compression, etc..

Stick with the $169 Q6600.... you won't be disappointed ;)

As for the mobo, I have and would recommend a Gigabyte P35-DS4 (I am running a 8600GT in the primary slot and an LSI MegaRAID 8408E in the secondary PCI-Ex16 slot). They have moved on to the EP45-DS4 model now though (as well as a version with the X48 chipset).

I'm really leaning towards the P5Q-E right now. I know my video card will interfere with SATA port 6, but I really doubt I'm going to ever have 6 SATA drives in this machine. I have a file server for that.

I thought about the P5Q Pro, but what is up with putting the floppy drive header down past the expansion slots was a good idea. Yea I still use a floppy drive enough that I want to keep one around.

What card are you using? My 9600gt doesn't cover that port, it's close but it could definitely still be used.

    8800GTS

It might just clear, but I already have a 1.5TB RAID5 array up and running so I'm not too concerned.

Which case do you have it in?
