Hey guys, i'm in the process of buying a new used car in the next few months and have decided roughly what I want to look at. I'm interested most likely in a 99/2000 BMW 3 series with fairly low km's.

I haven't been around many BMW's, and my knowlege on them is fairly slim with what are some of the up's and downs with the E46 3 series. Were there any common problems with them, things to look for down the road, certain things to look for before buying a particular one?

I'm undecided weather or not I'll be buying a coupe or Sedan, I could go either way pending on finding the right one. I see lots of 323's and 328's for sale with about 35-40K miles on them in my price range. Obviously the 328's motor would be a nicer powerplant then the 323's, but is there really much difference? I'll be looking at only 5 speed manuals. I've driven a few older 97 and 98 E36 328's and absolutely loved the car's feel all around as a whole.

What are some of the things I should look for, or be aware of when looking into these cars?

    Thanks

Well I have an E46 M3, and the only problems I know about are with the M3's engine and such. This does not pertain to you. If you really want a lot of info, check here:

    Ditto for me.

Gonna try and find a 323/328/325Ci in the 20-22,000 range.

    Hopefully a nice white one.

White on black leather > me. I'd love to find a nice low mileage 328ci in white.

PS: Thanks for the E46fan URL, i'll be doing alot of reading up over the next month. :)

I have an '04 Imola Red 330Ci ZHP Individual...

Did you have any specific questions? If so, ask away! I'm on e46fanatics too... There are some knowledgable people on there, but I find as a whole that it's mostly populated with young kids who's parents bought them an M3. Take everything you read on there with a grain of salt. You'll soon learn who and who not to listen to.

    As for common problems:
    - there seems to be a big hooplah on e46fan about tearing the rear subframe on e46 coupes. I haven't had that problem with my car.
    - The front door trim rattle and shake with each bass note. There's too much clearance between the bottom of the door trim and the metal door frame, and it rattles along with the music. Mine did this, and I fixed it in 30 mins with a trip to my local hardware store, $5 for a roll of PVC urethane tape (waterproof foamy stuff), and a screwdriver. I don't understand why people make such a big deal out of such small things.
    - Something about the rear Harman Kardon "subs" rattling. Mine doesn't do this.
    - Seems that the brake discs seem to wear out very quickly. Perhaps the pad compound is very hard on the rotors.
    - Sunroof sliding shade always gets stuck and needs to be oiled regularly
    - Window regulators are notorious for breaking. Buy the part from BMW and replace it yourself. Easy DIY, and save a few hundred dollars.

That's all I can think of right now, but they're the major issues e46s have... I've only had the one door rattle that didn't faze me at all.

Whatever you decide, make sure to get the car well checked out by a professional and get a good feel for the wear of the suspension. Verify whether the shocks have been replaced or not, they will probably need replacement. Inspect the bushings, etc...

If you plan on getting an E46, I'd suggest 328i. If you plan on modding for power, there isn't much significant results on 330i. You can certainly do more with the 328.

I sold mine last year for $20k and it had almost 30,000 miles. Ended up getting an X5. Here's a pic...

Maybe I was just lucky then. The only problem I had was an O2 sensor.

    :wavey: James!

My redesigned 02' 330i hasn't had any major problems so far either. Speakers tend to have problems in some cars, and I already had mine replaced once.

    welcome to the board man.

You'll find the main OT section here is about 300x more useless and fruity then our E46fanatics.com. Hotties section is golden though
