I am still in love with the e39 look. And if things look up.. I will have a chance at owning one.

What is the maintenance like for a 540i 6spd? What are some common things that go wrong (97/98 model year specifically), and if there are any better cars out there?

Personally I have always reckoned that the straight- six E39s were the best of the model range. The 540i is good, but if I remember rightly they used recirculating ball steering due to the size of the V8, compared to the sixes which use rack and pinion.
Result is that models like the 528i are said to have more direct steering and better feel because of the rack and pinion.

My father had a 2000 528i Sport, very nice car. Its for sale at the minute as well, unfortunately its in England and RHD.
