Thinking about getting one of these next year, most likely a 2001. Can anyone share their wisdom on the car? Experiences, horror stories, maintenance costs, how much I should pay at the most. Thanks in advance.

Not the same, but I just bought an E39 and used edmunds.com and their true market value for each car I looked at. I ended up paying about a grand under what my exact car should have gone for. Be very specific about colors, options, etc. It could save you some hassle.

That and check out bimmerforums.com there is some great advice there.

My folks had one of those new. Brilliant car in every respect, except for reliability.

Maintenance and repairs will be expensive. Reliability is below average.

I had a 98 with 90K miles. Gas mileage was horrible 12/15, but repairs were fairly reasonable. I used my 7er as a DD. Great car all the way around. One the best euro's I've owned and I've had quite a few.

Just like a V8 e39 as far as maintenance. Very similar cars.
