it's been a while since i tried to do this so i don't really know what's out there. I have a cable STB that has a built-in DVR. (optimum w/ scientific atlanta box). I want to record TV to my PC, convert it to ipod size, and watch it on the train. SD is fine, but i want to watch more than just basic cable channels, since i'm paying for them.

option 1 - obviously - the way that works the best is just to set up a bittorrent client with RSS. although i pay for my TV, i can't do this.

option 2 - then there's iTunes. first of all, i won't pay for the same thing twice. even so, $25/season is too much.

so is there another option? is there a way to build a box that will actually work?

If all you want to do is record your TV to your PC, since you have a DVR just record the show to the DVR. There is a composite output on the back that you can use for with the "Record to VCR" feature.
Next you just need tv capture card that allows for composite input

After that you're on your own to convert it to the iPod.

i know about that, but it will only "copy to VCR" in real time.

if i'm going to spend 30 min or an hour having it copy to my computer, THEN edit it...i might as well just watch the show.

firewire port shows up as an unrecognized device in windows, unless you know of drivers :/
