Why don't stores stock DVD-R DL DVD's? What am I missing?

I can buy them online.. but stores only stock +R DL's...

    Any thoughts?

DVD-R DL = fixed layer breaks = compatibility issues with burning software and drive burners.

According to the so called experts at cdfreaks,... Verbatim DVD+R DL (Singapore made) > *. everything else is super fail.

    I didn't even know -R DL existed....

Here is a site that lists blank media quality into teirs. Its old data and not sure if it ever gets updated. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Personally I never liked Verbatim. Never tried their DL media though. I usually buy TDK and if not them then Sony for DVD+R DL & DVD-R and haven't made any coasters that weren't the result of user error (wrong setting) or a bad file.

TDK is my preferred brand for media. They are great.

I have always heard that -R was the more "compatible" format until very recently. Perhaps manus have changed?

It used to be that -R was more compatible but +R was higher quality (both only slightly). I think they are pretty much the same now as far as single layer. As for DL, I just found out about the -R DL.

digital is digital. quality is the same. +R supported some features that allowed photo storage and random-access easier. But for movies and other sequential-access needs, -R was preferred.

What about for pure data (software)? I guess that follows under sequential-access?

Digital is digital only after the information has been read. I was referring to the burn quality. Just something I remember reading about quite some time ago... I don't think it has any bearing with modern stuff.

    software installation is largely sequential.

some other software uses (such as backups of pictures) would be more random access.

I'll try to explain once more... then I quit

"I was referring to the burn quality", kind of like how scratches affect optical media, so does burn quality.... bad example but the best I could come up with at the moment.

Do you have any evidence to support that?

    because afaik it's the same.

Out of all the blank dvd discs I've tried, Verbatim has been across the board the best. My Plextor 716A freaking smokes with them.
