you are using your DVD+RW drive to do the ripping, right?
I know there were some brands of DVD-ROM drives that were limited to a 2X DVD rip even though they could read DVDs at 12X.
I think Toshiba was the one making them.
Don't know if this translated into DVD+RW drives or not though.
    Maybe this is the problem?

Whats the overall time it takes to complete the full rip and burn? Right now, It takes me about a total of 35mins a dvd. I'd say 25 mins to rip the dvd and then it takes about 10 to burn the actual movie. I'm burning @ 4x.

I use my DVD-ROM to rip. Using DVD Shrink it takes about 25 minutes to RIP, then I burn using nero and it takes about 25 as well.

with the 708a, you have to unlock the drive before ripping at higher speeds. take out all discs, close the tray. wait. hold the eject button in until the green light blinks. release. tray comes out, disc goes in. rip at higher speeds. 12x is obtained on dual layer movies usually
