Which Brand should I go with?

    Sony
    Nec
    or
    Pioneer?

    ALL 16x dual layer capability

Can someone give me a decision based on their experiences with them.

NEC seems to be soup du jour of OT, but I've had awesome luck with my Lite-On drive... though it's an SL 8x. Hoping to get a DL 16x in the new system I'm building (hopefully this spring).

Everyone I've talked to says the NEC and the Pioneer are the best drives on the market. I have an LG and it had some serious issues when I first bought it (wouln't burn any faster than about 1.5x), but since installing a new version of Linux, it works great.

    go with the pioneer 109
just came out and is ahead of the pack. its kinda hard to find now but in a few weeks it'll be all over, i think the only way you can buy it is OEM or bare drive. newegg.com and zipzoomfly both has it in stock. just make sure you have a dvd-rom that reads quick enough to support the data to the burner. i just bought the sony dru-700a and i regret buying it. i had the pioneer 107 until it died. i needed something quick and the only burner i could find in local stores was the sony. i think i'm gonna end up ordering the pioneer 109 today anyways. if not then try checking out the plexors.

6x DL pretty sweet either way if you go NEC or Pioneer you'll get a good drive.

I have the NEC 3500 I'd recommend it to anyone, the Pioneer is a good drive too from all the reviews I've read.

Look at getting the NEC 3520, faster RW speeds I believe is the main difference, however that 109 Pioneer is faster in the DL writes which I'd like more than RW speed.

    plextor 716 series

i've always preferred plextor over the rest. i'd recommend it if you dont mind the price premium.

I'm extremely happy with my Lite-On SOHW 1633S
I got the retail version from newegg.com, although yes the OEM would have been cheaper.
I figure if Tom's Hardware in it's round up of 10 DVD+/-RW 16x DL burns gives the NEC ND-3500 top billing and says this Lite-On is the next best choice, then it can't be bad at all. Plus a bunch of other reviews also liked the Lite-On as well.

If I was forced to choose between the NEC and the Pioneer however, then I'd take the NEC. It performs much better than the Pioneer....more so with the firmware updates (hacked and official).

you trust toms hardware -- that is your weakness.
