Bah. Newegg sells Lite-Ons for $60.

    Lite On > Plextor.

Higher quality drives, more stable, reliable, and they tend to be a tad quicker.

I'd get the NEC ND-3520A over the Plextor or Lite On

    Either NEC or Pioneer.

I would recommand that you DO NOT BUY PLEXTOR...

I had been a pretty loyal Plextor user for years until recently. Basically you are NOT getting what you paid for...

My Plextor 708 crapped out on me exactly a year after I got the drive. Search some optical drive forum, you will know that it is a very common problem that Plextor 708 drives will fail to read/write CD [but will still read and burn DVD]

I paid $300 + tax for the drive, a year after 16X NEC drive costs only CDN $80. Wasn't even worth it to pay for the shipping to RMA an refurbished drive. The tech support guy told me that about 5 to 10% of their 708 goes bad. :ugh:

So, basically you no longer pay for top notch quality or service. Just get the NEC or BenQ. My 708 was made in China, the 24x plextor drive I got was made in Japan and is still alive and kicking in my Linux box.

So, that's just my personal experience. Maybe you will enjoy yours, I don't know. But if you watch closely, the Premium on Plextor drives went from 50% to 125% vs other well known brands. But, their product is getting shitter... At least til the 708. I don't know about the 12x and 16x ones since I would not ever get a Plextor drives any more.

Do a google search. Decent reviews for this burner. Most are complaints about the new firmware. I'm getting it now because it's cheap. You need to learn how to shop or where to look for hot deals.

    $116 - instant $10 - $30 plex AR - $ 30 bb AR = $46 which is a steal.

I'd definitely recommend NEC or Lite-On. I've used both, currently using a NEC 3520 with hacked firmware and very pleased with both. Pioneer makes a good DVD burner as well, I have one in my workstation at work and it has not burned a single coaster yet. I have probably burned a combined 1000 DVDs at work and at home, all 3 drives have been excellent.
