My 20d has an unusual amount of noise, even at ISO 100. Here is a pic from my 20d:

Here is a similar pic from my roommate's 350d using similar settings:

With the 350d, the background is blurry but not noisy. The picture taken with the 20d, the background and upper left of the chair is very noisy. I reset the camera to all factory settings. What am I doing wrong here? The lens I'm using is a Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM with a 72mm Hoya UV filter.

Might just be shit on your filter/glass? Try without UV filter...try with different lens.

It looks like the books and some of the background is actually distorted.

    Pic from my 20d:

    Pic from 350d:

    Taken with Canon 70-200mm f/4L

Both taken in Program mode, 1/60 shutter speed, f/4.0, ISO 100, built in flash. It's not as bad since there's some outside light, but you can really see it in the 20d pic on the right side of the chair and the speaker on the floor in the bottom right.

looks like it's only affected in dark areas, because in the first picture the background looks like the speaker and part of the chair in the second picture.

That is a reasonable assumption, Most of my outdoor pictures are fine, which is why I didn't notice it sooner, but even in the dark areas of my outdoor pictures it has that effect.

have you tried a higher iso? I know that sounds silly but if the "noise" is increased there may be a problem with your camera. Especially if it's new it's best to find out now.

Based on the feedback I'm getting here, I think I'll send it to the Canon center in Irvine. It should still be under warranty so I might as well. Thanks for your help :)
