I just got a Rebel XTi with the kit lens. I want to get a good telephoto zoom lens with a Macro function. I was looking at the Canon EF 75-300mm lens, but I heard it is only a mediocre lens. I don't want to spend a lot, but I want to take good pics. Anyone have any recommendations of other brands to look at? Thanks in advance.

I'd like to get an all around lens to shoot telephoto (sports, nature, etc.) but with a macro setting so I can get macros of flowers or whatever I happen to want to shoot. I don't have a specific subject in mind yet.

I don't have an exact budget in mind, but less is better. :)

I'm looking for a zoom lens, not a prime tele.

That would be good. I could get a teleconverter and add a little to the zoom, too. I just wasn't sure what brand of lenses are better than others. ie) sigma, canon, etc.

Canon lenses are most typically better than Sigma or Tamron. Certain lenses (like the Tamron 28-75) out perform their Canon "counter-part".

and i believe there is a way to get the lens to freeze at any f-stop you choose...something like having to remove the lens while the camera is on or something unsafe sounding lol

Hold the dof preview button down, and take the lens off. The aperture blades'll stay in place
