I just got my first DSLR camera, and and a complete newb, the versatility it presents is kinda of daunting at first, and I am still a newb. I was just how long it took you guys to start getting a real good feel for shooting with your DSLRs,and start putting out nice picture.

It probably depends on the background they had before they got their DSLR. I shot (and still shoot) film with a canon SLR. So when I made the transition, there really was no loss, just instead of negatives my end product are digital files.

It also depends on how much you shoot and how much you are taking away from each session. If you usually go out and shoot at the same time of day/night then most likely you won't have a full skill set. It took me quite awhile to get comfortable to be able to shoot in manual mode and not worry if I got the shot or if I messed something up. Digital makes that process easier, you get instant feedback.

Just play with different settings, look at other people's pictures and try and tell what they did, or find someone, not on the internet, that knows about cameras and go take some pictures with them. I'm sure they can give you tips or explain things to you.

I'd say I was pretty good at photography since I was first introduced to a camera.

I know not everyone has the money to go to photography school, but that is the way you better learn photography, you could also take a class in a community college to just learn the basics...... I don't mean to sound arrogant, but just because it is a digital camera doesn't mean it will do everything by itself and you will instantly get results, learn your basics!!!! Get a cheap filim camera at ebay with manual settings, no AF or anything like that, and shoot film for a while, read books about it, I dunno, I have posted my opinion on this matter a couple times. Now if you just want a fun camera to take pics of random stuff, and you are not really serious about photography, get a P&S. It is not my intention to sound like a jerk. This is just my opinion.

I've been shooting for 4 years, and I officially consider myself "good". I think. Maybe. Gooder than some people, anyway :dunno:
