Well my contract with Earthlink is almost up. Earthlink has good customer service but the speeds aren't that great. 1.5 mb download and 2xx upload and dynamic IP which i hate. I used to have Direct TV Dsl which gave you a Dedicated IP and no contract but they are out of biz now. I understand that with cable you get dedicated IP? And i see most people that post really fast download speeds are on cable. Which one is better and more stable/accurate?

DSL is more reliable, cable is faster sometimes and is cheaper.

I am very happy with my Comcast cable. Big improvement from 56k :bigthumb:

Plus, in my area at least, the bill is only $19.95 until 2004.

Of the two evils, Southwestern Bell vs Charter, I take the cable company.

DSL for consistency in your speed
    (1 phone line : 1 house)

Cable for really fast but sometimes slow..and slower and slower the more people in your area subscribe..
(1 cable line : many many houses )

Little do you know, DSL CAN slow if many users are connected to the same CO.

That's ok when you live in my neighborhood. 90% of my neighbors are old people who are afraid of computers! :)

My point was, DSL is not exactly a 1:1 connection like you said.

DSL by far. I had cable and fucking haaaaaaaaated it.

Cable company was the demon spawn to deal with, NO tech support whatsoever, service was always taking a shit!

I've never had my DSL take a shit on me..... never.

And the tech support never makes me wait on hold more than 5 minutes and I'v eonly had to use it, like once.

    Cable = :down:

I used to have DSL... it was quick, but it would pause every once in a while, really piss me off. Cable in this area is consistant and fast.

depends on your area - I have had both (on Earthlink DSL now)

@Home was by far the best IMO - fast and cheap but I guess that's why they bit the dust

I had Cox cable after that but they signed up a lot of people in the area and speed went way down (decent service though).

You know what Earthlink DSL is like - mine is not superfast but it's close to what I had w/Cox and is cheaper and has great service.

I'm thinking about getting SBC Yahoo DSL, is the installation easy? I actually want to get it hooked up for a business, does it matter? The price is getting better, $29.99 per month w/1 year contract. What other prices do other companies charge?

Oh yea another question... Can you have a cable broadband connection without acutally having a cable television connection?

    :werd: same here

I've had cable since yesterday, previously had DSL for the past 2 years

The speeds seem about the same to me. While the actual subscription costs are more than DSL (I work at an ISP that does DSL, so I was charged company cost, otherwise they would be equal). Not having to have a phone line makes Cable a little cheaper.

Time will tell if I like it better, I've heard cable can take a shit in bad weather. My dsl was rock solid even when tornados were all over the area I lived in.
