EDIT: Thanks to Kane for moving the thread. I plan to update every Saturday morning, after the first shit of the day and before any meals.

OK, so I started working out last week. Haven't been to the gym since HS. Goal is to gain weight and muscle mass. I plan to weight train 4 days/week and have 30 min cardio sessions 2-3 days/week.

I read the nutrition EDU, very informative stuff. But now I want an actual critique.

    I'm 5'8, 163lbs, 25 years young.

Here were my diets for the last couple days:

Thoughts? I think the carbs/protein on 7/12 were better than 7/11.

whats your body type? pics? if your family tends to be lean and thin you could have high metabolism which will mean you may have to bump up atleast 500 more. i mean your only 5'8 so i dont think youll have a problem filling out. goodluck

I'm going to have to wait a few months, since I bought 10lbs. :o

Measured it out, also bought an electronic food scale last week.

Definitely ectomorphic. Probably have high metabolism, have always been thin. No pics, gotta wait for my memory card to come in.

Bumping it up would be no problem, I still feel kind of hungry at the end of the day. I thought this was going to be a lot of food but it was actually very manageable.

as long as they are foods you can prepare easily, enjoy eating, and could see yourself doing every day repetitively then it looks pretty good.

Thanks. :wiggle: I also bought a dedicated food steamer which makes steaming veggies/potatoes a lot easier. I also use to be a line cook so the cooking/preparing part is easy for me.

But the repetition could get boring. Isn't it more important to keep my cals up and macros in the right proportion?

Looks good, as long as you keep on the same pace as those 2 days you should be doing good. See how much weight you gain - you won't be able to gain more than 2-3lbs lean mass per month naturally so anything more than 1lb per week is going to be excess fat.

That's not even true, ESPECIALLY for someone who just started working out.

Absolutely, but there will probably be many days where you come home after 10 grueling hours of work and have some ridiculous papers to write that are due tomorrow, and the last thing you'll want to do is have that same chicken/broccoli/brown rice dinner you've had ad nauseam for the past 3 weeks, and just fill yourself with chips or something. not saying your diet in particular, and maybe you can do it just fine for yourself. but maybe varying it around - chicken one night, steak the next, fish the following, then back to chicken, etc with roughly the same cals/macros can keep things fun. :)

He said he's an ecto and that's a pretty good average to assume. I didn't take that into account though, if he has some muscle memory to take advantage of from high school lifting, he'll definitely be able to gain more.

It's not even if he has muscle memory or not. Beginners can gain a ton very quickly and to limit oneself by the scale is just going to hinder progress.

Sure thing, I've been logging stuff into fitday like it's my business and I find it pretty fun and interesting to look at.

Since this has been up for a few days maybe a mod can move this into Training logs and rename it to "drumbandit's diet log"?

If he's a real ecto, then not really.

    Week 1 update

    Previous weight: 163lbs
    Current weight: 162lbs

Alright it seems that I lost a pound even though I have been eating more. This is probably due to me being in the gym regularly. However, I have been a little lazy at times with my diet (i.e. missed meals).

My average caloric intake per day is pretty much at maintenance with the way I have been training. It definitely needs to go up. Probably taking too much protein as well, so I'll increase fats and carbs.

    Week 2 update

    Previous weight: 162 lbs
    Current weight: 164 lbs

Increased my cals a bit but only gained a couple pounds. Honestly, I thought I would gain more but average of 3300/day seems perfect. Will reassess after a couple more weeks. Anyone else think I may be overcounting calories?

    Week 3 update

    Previous weight: 164 lbs
    Current weight: 162 lbs

I need to eat more obviously. Will bump it up to 3500. I have been a little lazy preparing meals as of late so some of the cals this week may have not been clean.
