I'm in a friendly body fat competition with a few guys at work. We got a reading done with calipers back in February and we're supposed to do it again later in May. We all started around 16.8% and are doing pretty well so far.

My question is: if we're all pretty close when the deadline arrives, will messing with my water levels improve my body fat reading? Could I drop a significant amount of fat (in the caliper's eyes) by cutting carbs/chugging water for a few days, then cutting water and carbing up the day before?

you will see a significant drop in caliper readings if you drop your water for sure.
Some members should be able to offer some tips on dropping it about 3-4 days before.

I theory the pinch should come out about the same but in reality less water will mean decreased pinched millimeters.

Right, that's kind of my question. So the caliper reads bloat (or lack thereof) as body fat? How significant is it?

Depends on how fat you are and how many sites you're pinching. :dunno: I don't think it will be a huge difference though.

You can't just chug large amounts of water and then cut to minimal amounts, it doesn't work like that and it will make your body feel like shit.

You need to train your body to accept less and less water. You start out with normal intake and slowly decrease the amount of water intake per day so your body adjusts.

You DON'T want to load up on carbs.

I'm hoping to be around 10-12%. They pinch three spots - chest, stomach, and quad.

I'm not sure what your routine is/was like, but to go from roughly 17% BF down to 10-12% in three months seems a bit unrealisitc. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong though. Good luck.

Not really but he'll have to plan everything out. Percentage can sometimes make things look higher. He may only have to lose 10lbs. of fat.

How big are you? You might not even have to go through all the hassle of trying to "cheat" the system.

We weighed in a few days ago and I had gone from 16.6% @ 215lbs to 11.6% at 191 lbs. I weighed myself at the end of the day and I was 197 lbs, so I must've dropped a fair amount of water right at the end by manipulating my water levels and carb loading.

Whatever happened, I one my contest and got a free meal at Famous Dave's :bigthumb:
