My vehicle is still registered in Alaska. I still have the plates and registration. Can I put those on my vehicle when I'm off post? I just don't like the idea of using the stupid USA plates when I rally.

Here's the answer to this same question that SeaMack99 asked me yesterday:

But...if you're here under SOFA then you must abide by USAREUR / USAFE / NAVEUR regulations. Why isn't the car registered here yet?

Where are you going to rally? Me thinks driving with U.S. plates is asking for unwanted attention from Polezei.

I know my parents didn't even bother driving our car once we got it over there until after they got the International Plates on it.

MP's would probably harass you when you tried to come on post too. When I was over there they wouldn't even turn your car over to you without having the USAREUR registration and plates done so I imagine that is all they want you having on there.

I wouldn't come on post with them on. It would only be for the rally.

    but again...why?

what's so wrong with the issued plates that you want to run with plates from back home?

I think we're all confused as to why this is even an issue:dunno:

Because I'd rather use my Alaska plates more than my USA plates. Simple, really.

No, not simple...Irrational and I'm willing to bet illegal. I'll dig up the specific regulations and laws here in a bit.

See - It used to be when you inprocessed (I know that was 5yrs ago for me...) they used to (maybe they still do, if they don't they should) file past in the inprocessing center and do their little briefs... "Hi, I'm from the community bank, welcome to Germany - oh one thing before I start: Don't fuck with the Polizei..."

"Hi, I'm here from the Library, one thing - don't fuck with Polizei..." etc etc etc - all on down the line every agency would mention it...and you know...if everyone is saying it...it might be goddamned true. Anyhow...

Just checked AE 190-1 (which applies to ALL Military personnel regardless of branch of service) removal of the USA plates is not authorized and subject to action from the chain of command.

Just checked with JAG - Service Members enter into Germany under Military Visa and are automatically covered under SOFA. SOFA dictates that military personnel must register their POVs and not operate them under any other plates.

    Bottom line - Nope...not happening.

even when I was there in the 90's we were pretty much told "All those rights you had with Police back in the States...yeah throw them out the window when dealing with the Polizei. Don't fuck around with them".

And hell we were just teenagers and we knew not to fuck around with them:o.

Well damn, the only reason I was using my US plates is because my car should be here around May 5th and it takes about 3weeks for me to get stupid Belgian plates here. Bitburg opens up on the 19th so I may be out of luck.
