Starting a new job on Monday the first of Feb.

The dress code is "casual." I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I don't want to be overdressed or underdressed.

I understand it's better to be overdressed.

I was thinking of hitting up h&m, zara for slacks/shirts. any other suggestions? my build is tall and a little lanky.

imo casual always means jeans and in some workplaces it even means shorts and flips. If it were me on my first day I would wear a nice pair of dark jeans, boots, and a button up shirt and have nicely groomed hair. I think slacks would be overdressed. Being dressed nicely is good, but you never want to go overboard because you don't want to come across as 'snooty' and possibly aliente yourself. We have a guy who wears suits here and everyone calls him 'suit guy' behind his back.

What did people wear when you interviewed? That can give you a clue on what to wear. If no one was wearing slacks, I would not wear slacks.

out here, casual does not include jeans

i'd wear some decent slacks or something anyways, it's easier to dress nice at a work place if you've always dressed nice

don't be that guy who all of a sudden starts wearing slacks after a promotion

Easy, just ask someone who works there.

Did you notice how people dressed when you interviewed? Is it a place where you can swing by and check ie a retail or similar situation.

In my office, "casual" means 2-sizes-too-big dress shirt worn untucked (bottom of shirt hitting just above the knees) worn with 2-sizes-too-big slacks (with about 12" of break) and some god awful black, square toed rubber soled sketchers.

lots of hair gel, too. spikey hair = win. the more visible scalp the better.

dress up the first day, then adjust accordingly. better to start off looking professional and work your way to slob, than slob and work your way to professional.

"Casual" in any office setting I've ever been in is, shirt + tie + slacks, i.e., no jacket. Maybe no tie.
