Aspyr Media on Monday announced that Doom 3 for the Mac is now shipping and will show up on retail shelves by March 19.

Licensed by Aspyr, Doom 3 was developed by id Software and features "never before seen detail with real-time lighting and shadows, real-world physics and killer AI, and battle in team or Deathmatch-based multiplayer modes."

"DOOM 3 has instantly become a must have title for any game fan, and now Macintosh owners can experience the unmatched atmosphere and edge-of-your-seat gameplay that critics and gamers have been raving about," id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead said. "DOOM 3's intense combat, realistic sound and physics, and unbelievably terrifying creatures draw you into the gaming experience like never before, and our bleeding-edge technology is the perfect showpiece for the power of today's Macintosh systems."

Doom 3 requires Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later and sells for $49.99.

Saw a demo of it at the Apple Store here in Austin a couple of weeks ago. Looked pretty cool.

They were running it on a 1.8 GHz single CPU G5 with the standard video card for that model and it was doing pretty well, but I'd imagine it would be not so great on anything less.

The PC version is equally, if not more, resource intensive.

I'll stick to running high end games on my PC. Doom3, HL2, CS:S, etc.
