how to add features like user profiles, user ratings on things they like/dislike, like all these little modules and sections of the website I have in my head, how would I put them into a site? are there terms I can search for in google to lead me to websites that I could base my stuff of off? what language/program would a website designer use to make these features?

like let's say I like amazon.com's rating system on their items. just that feature. how would I get something like that for my website?

    thanks

You need a database to store the ratings, comments. Primarily PHP/MySQL.

Or use a framework like Drupal, or a CMS like Wordpress, that give you the core system then you add modules/plugins for ratings, voting, polls, etc.

Learn PHP, and if you want to build the site and not have it completely suck ass - get a book on program logic and learn about how you should be trying to complete tasks. Knowing the logic makes learning languages 1000x easier.

I hate it because my boss insists on using it for absolutely everything. We could have a page with "Hello world" in times new roman on a white bg and he'd still want it on drupal.

Yeah there are plenty of situations where another platform does a better job, best to keep an open mind.
