Man slain by police was pointing replica gun
Chief Gerry Whitman said even police firearms experts didn't realize the weapon was fake at first.
    By John Ingold
    Denver Post Staff Writer

The man shot and killed by Denver police Saturday evening pointed a fake gun at officers, Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman said Sunday.

But Whitman said the gun looked real enough for the three officers who fired to feel legitimately threatened.

"It's definitely not a toy," Whitman said of the black plastic gun made in Taiwan, which he said could have been used to fire darts or pellets. "It's a replica handgun. I don't know if the suspect was treating it as a toy, but he pointed it at uniformed officers. Obviously, they took that very seriously."

The gun looks so real, Whitman said, that department firearms experts didn't realize it was a fake until they picked it up and started manipulating it, well after the shooting.

Saturday's shooting was the second fatal officer-involved shooting in the metro area in 24 hours. Friday night, a Westminster officer shot and killed a man who police say lunged at the officer with a knife.

In the Saturday shooting, Whitman said, officers on cruising detail shortly before 5 p.m. on Federal Boulevard spotted a Jeep Cherokee that had been reported stolen in Aurora. They followed it into the Sun Valley public housing complex, where the car was parked and a man got out of the back seat.

Three officers - Sgt. Rick Stern and officers James

Medina and Andrew Richmond - confronted the man near West 10th Avenue and Clay Way and ordered him to get down on the ground. Instead, Whitman said, the man pulled the fake gun and pointed it at Stern. All three officers fired.

Officials haven't released the man's identity pending the coroner's formal identification.

Police arrested two other people in the Jeep, 21-year-old Dale Edward Sirratt and 32- year-old Michael Anthony Romero, on suspicion of car theft. Both have lengthy arrest records, including for vehicle theft, according to Denver police and Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

Why the fuck would they wait for him to point it at them? Before they shoot? Most of the cops I know would not wait to get a gun pointed at them before they shoot you. If you pull out a gun, it's over.

the moment you act like you are going to draw a gun they hae every right to draw theirs. if they then see a gun while drawing theirs you should end up in a body bag. I was over at a friends house. and he had an airsoft pistol. I sat there looking at it for 30-45 seconds. I actually asked to pick it up(common courtesy with guns) and was suprised at how light it was. With a mag that makes if feel like the actual weight until you pick it up and play with it a little you really can't tell. And in the time it takes for you to decide that it isn't a cell phone(some guy got killed for pulling his cell like it was a gun) and looks like a gun they have every right to shoot you to defend themself.

They shouldnt call the police experts, because I'm sure they were just regular police.

I remember a couple years back, some kid got arrested when he was seen in a local HS parking lot during school hours, taking a black handgun from the trunk of his car and sticking it into his waistband. Turns out that it was a pellet gun and he had 3 of them on him.

stupid reporters. They should have a cop do a live tv interview, and he should pull an airsoft on them and when the reporter craps themself the cop starts laughing and tells them its fake. Reporter then says "but I didn't know it was fake!" and the cop says..."now you get it ;) "

i knew a kid who tried to rob this drug dealers house with an airsoft pistol.

he breaks into the house and goes into the guys bedroom and demands for the money and drugs. the drug dealer slept with a gun under his pillow and went for it.

kid I knew got shot in the leg and head, lived though.

No. Have you ever watched a video on tv with police in it? Gun does not equal shoot. Gun pointed at you = shoot.

I see no problem with the actions of the police.

I actually liked airsoft at first.. was fun to play with friends. However, this one friend, no matter how many times he hangs out with us, ALWAYS has a goddamn airsoft gun with him, and he always thinks it's funny to pull that shit out and shoot people at random times.

One of these days, I'm going to pistol whip his ass.. with a REAL weapon.

hmmm lets think this out. If somebody is confronted by police where else would they be poiting the gun? do you think they plan on holdin themself hostage?
