I used to take advantage of it, until my relationship dissolved.

At my last company, I worked with the HR director to get DP benefits. It was a tough battle, but after over a full year of negotiations, we got the benefits.

Before my GF left the company she was with, I could have taken advantage of her health insurance. The only requirements were cohabitation and a "stable" relationship of at least 6 months. They never really defined stable, so I guess that was just a way of making lawyers happy.

We never did as I already had insurance and the costs were prohibitive, but they were available and the coverage was good. I would have done it had other circumstances not been present.

In Canada domestic partner benefits are equal to benefits for heterosexual couples... it is the law. No discrimination is allowed.

I worked for a large company (7,000 employees), no-one had ever asked for them before, so I did, CFO made some calls and 24 hrs later, a full domestic benefit package was in place. Just the way it should be.
