I did a big group shoot this past weekend at an empty warehouse. One of the models I got in touch with has 15+yrs of dance, so I thought I'd love for her to be the start of my "flowing" series I want to do.... Does the edges of the fabric being clipped, and the slight ghosting of her arm hurt the shot at all? I've got several I love, but the fabric doesn't stay completely within the frame....

if you're curious, lighting is a big octo left and a strip light right. profoto pack.

I don't mind the motion blur. I like what you have done with the picture.

it's due to the fabric blocking out the light... In hindsight I probably could have put another strobe for a little fill in front. I might be able to dodge the legs a bit in post when I take it to CS3 to work on the cloning.....

I personally don't mind the lost edge, but I do think the arm should've been stopped. But just my opinion.

It adds to the photo, in my opinion, rather than hurt it. Gives you a sense of motion. On the other hand, if you had captured it w/o blur, it really would give it an almost surreal quality... Rather like the oracle in The 300, where they would stop to slow-mo at some points during the sequence (to let all the pimple faced virgins scope her nips.)

just showed it to the model and she's thrilled.... I'm still not 100% sure I like the edit or not though.

It works. The alternative would bring some different qualities to the image, which would work as well. The fringes of the fabric getting trimmed a little bit doesn't bother me in the slightest, but then again i don't pixel peep, so it's not going to get to a guy like me, or even likely be noticed.

Maybe reflect some flash off the ground?

    for the legs?

more than likely next time we shoot I'll put a strobe down low and set it about a stop below my key light so it won't affect the overall exposure and just add a little light to the legs when the fabric blocks it. I'm afraid bouncing a strobe off the ground could yield in to much light spill, and color contamination.

how about you get a wider shot next time and frame her in a empty warehouse, with her in motion?

so many people forget that THIS is the reason for the photo. If she's happy then that's all that matters in the grand scheme of things.

it doesn't seem that way. It was a big group shoot, not a client and shooter. This was for the benefit of both parties, rather than a paid gig by one client.

Works: if you have an opportunity, there's an idea you could give a try that works great with a dancer for a model. completely black, long exposure, wide angle. Have her dance across the exposure, while you pop a strobe at certain points to get a full exposure of the dancer at various points through the same frame. When done right, it looks awesome.

yeah, it was a group shoot, but it's still important to me that the models I work with are happy with the product I deliver. For personal, and professional reasons.

wasn't really possible to go wider with the set up I was using. Much wider and you can see the pack and heads.... next time I'll be shooting with my elinchroms instead of a borrowed profoto set up and I'll be able to space the strobes out a bit more.
