a friend is asking this. he's thinking about signing up for the Navy. his recruiter said he can have 1 year DEP before bootcamp and that 1 year will count toward the 8 years in the contract. is it true? if it is, what does that year count as, reverse or active?

Yes it counts. Entered the DEP on September 20th, 1997, left for basic training (Army) July 16th, 1998, ETS from the Army on July 15th 2002 and the 8 year obligation ended on September 19th, 2005.

I can only speak for the Army. It won't count for your actual enlistment contract, but it factors in for that 8 year IRR period.

ditto for any branch of the military. If they have a Delayed Enlistment Program, it counts towards your IRR years.
