I think I'll be headed out to california for a month to go surfing on my summer break. I don't know that I will be able to get a gym membership ...

I'm wondering what, if really any, benefits surfing provides outside of calories burned. It doesn't seem to be good cardio because paddling out doesn't take 15 minutes. It wears my arms and shoulders done paddling ... but will that equate to high rep, low weight exercise?

I always end up having gym breaks because of traveling and want to make this as as little of a detriment as possible :)

Its not gonna do shit for building. Add some push ups, core work, and pull ups if you can find a bar. Most importantly though enjoy the surfing and vacation.

Personally I would try to arrange some kind of gym time.

    surfing is EXCELLENT cardio.

paddling out might take you more than 15 minutes, depending on the size of the swell.

I dropped @ 20lbs in just a few weeks while learning to surf.

think of surfing as HIIT in the water.

you paddle balls to the wall to get past the breakers for 10-20 minutes.
then you wait a sec, see a wave coming, paddle balls to the wall to catch it.
ride it or not, turn around and paddle balls to the wall to get past the breakers again.

    repeat for 2hours etc.

i did a 2.5 hour surfing session one saturday and to let you know how good a workout it is, when i got home later that night my right lat locked up on me as i was trying to wipe my butt.

lol at your lat locking up kingGargantuan. As you say that, I've def spent 10-15 minutes paddling out lol ... when you get out to the line up all you want to do is sit for a bit.

I'll try to join a gym, but I worry that a). I am going to be tired from surfing b). a gym is orange county is going to be substantially more than the $32 a month I pay here :)

No, surfing is not great cardio. Unless youre fielding set after set of great waves its not gonna be close to hiit.

if you dont think surfing is fantastic cardio you are riding mush.

After a day of surfing i am completely and utterly exhausted.

tell the gym you are thinking of joining. should be able to go at least a few times for free.

you can't be surfing on the east coast

I've had some killer paddle sessions during some NE'ers and hurricanes, but for the most part it's like 1-5 minutes to get out there, sit around for 5 minutes waiting for something worthwhile.

it's a good workout, but it does conflict with lifting

I surf 3x a week and it is excellent cardio and is a pretty good shoulder workout as well.
