If your goals are to build muscle and gain weight...

Let's say you eat the same exact calories in both situations

eating 3 large meals spread out throughout the day

and eating 6 smaller meals spread out throught the day...

does it really matter? is there any truth to the whole "if you eat too many calories in one sitting your body will not use all of it"

If you are trying to add lean size, you are not going to be able to enough of the right foods in three meals to gain muscle.

You could eat 4,000 cals in crap food easily in three meals but you are going to put on a ton of fat. If you are trying to eat clean cals, you're going to need more meals spaced out through the day to hit your target calories and minimize fat gain.

Not to mention the speed at which your body metabolizes the food you put in it. Research has shown that when your body gets low on blood sugar, among other things, it will go into a type of starvation mode where it turns to self preservation. Because fat is used to store what your body needs, you'll produce more if it if your body is constantly going in and out of these starvation modes. Keeping the nutrient levels in your body level throughout the day is the best way to burn fat and build muscle.

Meal frequency is more about controlling portions than anything else.

Jesus christ the body doesn't go into starvation mode from missing a meal during the day. :uh:

Starvation mode is when you are consistently eating much fewer calories than you need for days on end.

If you get 4000 cals from 3 meals or 6 meals and it takes 4000 cals just to hold your weight you WILL NOT gain fat. Its just easier to have your micros setup with more meal frequency. I eat only when I'm hungry, usually ends up being 5 sometimes 6 meals a day, right now I'm one of the leanest on this site(which doesn't say much).

eating more frequently makes it easier to get in more cals and increases appetite (for me at least)
