i thought they were demilitarized after ww2?
they have a Self Defense Force or sumthing like that, anymore details i dont know em but im sure someone else might.
Yeah, that's about all I know as well. I believe after the war their constitution only allows for a purely defensive (as opposed to an offensive) military.
That, and they have been battling a hellacious war for decades with some goofy monstors that scream and spark a lot. And they step on buildings and throw tantrums.
Oh - and they also have lots of megalomaniac characters that want to take over the universe and show off their broly self.
But that's all I know.
edit: oh, and they also have vending machines that sell used panties. I think that's all I know.
I saw a few Japanese Army guys in the Subway at Kuwait Air Base a while back, so they do have forces in the coalition.
I read about that. It was/is extremely controversial in Japan. I wonder if the troops they have in the coalition are taking part in any combat patrols, raids, etc?
24 hour. and a pizza place next door.
Japan had some of their forces in Iraq like a year ago and the insurgents kidnapped some Japanese TV reporter and said they would only release him if Japan pulled out all their forces. I don't know what happened though.
Yes, Japan has a military. It's set up pretty much like ours (the US). True, thier constitution only allows them to act in self defense. The missions they were/are doing in Iraq/Afghan are mainly logistic support and mainly maritime (IE helping with oilers to refuel our ships, delivering supplies and what not)
Most of the Japanese military trains right alongside all the US forces that are spread throughout Japan. However much smaller of a military they are I still wouldn't slight thier abilities in the least.
I have not seen any Japs yet.
Camp Victory is teh suck.
I should start calling you Jeeves
I see JMSDF guys every day. We share NAF Atsugi with them.
Their search planes (for SAR) are bright fucking neon orange.
Although technically Japan is only in possession of a defense army, it still spends US$44.693 billion a year on defense, which is like 3rd in the world.
Technically, the wording is fuzzy though and they're starting to expand the limits of what it publically acceptable.
Their Navy is not to be sneezed at, it's bloody capable.
They're still there, a Reconstruction Group with Aussies providing security.
and to Japan...
just not too keen on those red targets on their backs.
You'd think they'd have a subdued version or something...
On that note:
It's conjecture, but I'd venture that some of that money goes to the US Bases.
As part of the deal of US Bases being in Japan, they pay for certain things (like MLCs, etc).
