My friend's brand new macbook suffered a large crack in the screen after an unfortunate mishap.

    She's pretty crushed about it.

If she were to purchase applecare, does anyone think Apple would fix it for her free of charge?

As it stands now the dmg estimate is $1000.

    user negligence isn't covered.
if it's brand new though, she has apple care for the first year free.
worth a call, but if she broke it, chances are they won't cover it.

if the macbook shows signs of damage, like dinged up corners, they will void the warranty/applecare

it definitely wont be covered. i spilled a little bit of water on my screen, and now it's got a weird dark spot in the lower left corner, they wont replace my screen.

how new? 2nd, purchace applecare and when she calls in, tell the support agent that she wokeup to see the screen had been cracked. Never say that it was dropped or damaged in any way. you void the warranty/computer serial flagged if you do. Make sure there are no dings to make it look like it dropped. if it has dings, your last best hope is to bluff. Had a iBook G3 that went in for logic board replacement, service tech called 2 days later and asked about the cracks on the corner (sister dropped it twice) Called his bluff and yelled at him about staff damaging my iBook demanded to speak to his boss, he told me to calm down was probably staff fault. Got logic board, Optical drive, and outer case replaced.

i think this is the route i'm gonna suggest to her.

Amazingly enough another one of my friends spilt OJ on his macbook and fried something inside, so she may be able to get his screen for cheap.

We considered causing a shitstorm through applecare, but i doubt any of us has what it takes to act that pissed off.

    Thanks for the help everyone!
