If you're not used to running, you can expect to be sore for a few days. When I first started running, I was hella sore for about the first week, but after I was running 3-4 times a week for a while, it was like nothing.

As far as building muscle or getting definition, running doesn't do much in that department unless you do a LOT of it. Weights will build muscle and definition a lot faster than running will. Most people run for the aerobic benefits.

if you're a bigger guy, your calves might get a little out of it if you haven't ran for a while.

For your body, in terms of muscles - improved vascularity

If you're heavy and don't run often you can develop shin splints. When i started running last July i had shin splints so bad that i could barely walk. I took a break and since then haven't got any.

You don't have to be heavy to get shin splints. They're often caused by muscle imbalances, and doing too much too soon (overuse).

If it hurts at 1/2 a mile, stop there.

Build up gradually. You didn't start benching 200lbs did you? No, you had to work up to it.
