  1. I could start doing?

Im in the process of losing 40lbs (5lbs down) but I really haven't ever been in a weight room in my life.

This guy asked me to spot for him and I asked him how to squat properly. He showed me but I can't even squat the bar. Its not really lack of strength, for some reason while squatting, I can't get down into that position without being on the ball of my feet.

    Any ideas, suggestions?

It's harder to squat an empty bar, than it is to squat 135lbs. :dunno: (balance)

    NO.

If you can't squat an empty bar you are either weak as fuck or your form sucks.

Or you are VERY inflexible through the hips/glutes/hamstrings/lower back.

Olympic lifts are great. You need to learn to do them with no/low weight first though, to get your form right.

Walking lunges, and just more skating. Ice and or roller. You don't need extremely jacked legs to go faster, in fact they might become a burden. Most guys on here are a little to obsessed with getting huge fucked up nasty ass muscles (why I have no idea, most chicks think too much is fucking disgusting) but that being said. What I said above as well as bike riding and jogging will get you faster. Just be in great fucking shape, don't worry about how much you can squat so much. I have taken numerous clinics with professional players, including personal lessons with Rick Dipietro, and not all these dudes are HUGE. Just great shape

:hsugh: Mike Boyle says his AVERAGE hockey player can perform a single leg squat with 80 lbs and front squat 1.5x bodyweight (and 1.75 would be considered good)

it depends on your style of hockey....

if you want to play like the thugs on the Flyers then I suggest getting swole....but if you want to play like a pansy ass NJ Devil don't worry about it...

back in highschool some of the guys on my team played football, so for the first month or so of the season they were noticably slower because of the bulk they gained, even though they were in great shape.

im no expert at muscles or anything, but its something i noticed. :dunno:

it wasn't because of the bulk (some big dudes in the NHL) but it was probably because they had not been skating at all during football season...
