I was discussing this with a guy I know, and he was saying it was better, and I was arguing it wasn't. My logic is that there's an increased risk by not holding onto the bar, and it also puts a ton of strain on the wrist since you need to curl your hand back so you don't drop the weight on yourself.

He then said if there's no benefit and only more risk, why do people continue to do it, and I couldn't answer :o

Does anyone here use a thumbless grip? Are there benefits to it to offset the risk of using it?

Let his hands get sweaty, then watch the bar slip out and crush his throat. Just like that USC running back.

ALWAYS curl your thumbs around the bar. Another thing, don't listen to almost anybody at the gym. I see so many "big" guys with terrible form, it makes me sick.

You are right, keep those thumbs wrapped. Let Darwin do his thing with your gym buddy.

I just switched to thumbless on overhead work, it seems to feel a little better. I got the idea from Jm Wendler. I don't think it's really that big of a deal. I bet 90%+ of the people who worry about it being more dangerous do not go through a strict set up or have any consistency, focus, etc while benching.

That being said I have my new guys bench with a thumbed grip, and I do too, but I've done it both ways and it's not a huge difference in safety IMO.

i used to do it b/c it felt more natural, still does. But won't use it anymore b/c its worth the 1% chance that i crush my neck.

Had a pretty jacked dude tell me I shouldn't be squatting in flat sole shoes (was wearing my VFFs) because it will fuck up my arches. :hsd:

I did for a long time. I didn't use thumbs on anything. I have started because I think it was playing a part in fucking up my forearms. I don't recall ever coming close to dropping a bar doing it.

He was probably just trying to give you a heads up in a nice way that you look completely and utterly retarded wearing vibrams anywhere but around your house. I saw someone at Golds the other day with them and had a out loud giggle.

I'm guilty as fuck using this grip sometimes. I usually go pretty wide and just get annoyed with the regular thumbed grip at times.
