It seems like everybody sells within a few bucks of list. Doesn't anyone deal on them or maybe upgrades, like 256->512MB?

you can find all kinds of deals on RAM, but Apple Branded hardware rarely gets put on sale unless the model is or is going to be discontinued.

apple is kinda like Bose speakers. they never go on sale unless apple decides to discontinue that particular model. No one else should be selling a machine for less than you can get it for on the website or in the store.

yes, but bose is horribly over-rated by rich bastards that really don't know what a good home theatre is supposed to sound like.

I hope you don't really consider apple to be like bose. :mamoru:

Well they are both bought by a lot of people with money who think "its expensive, it must be the best."

i meant the same as in the way their pricing system works. Bose won't allow retailers to sell their product for less in order to keep the value high. at least the perceived value

Do they make you prove you're a student to get the discount online? I, um, lost my student ID.

apple requires that retail resellers keep their prices within $5 USD of the price apple sells their products for. this is true for new products; I'm not sure how other types of products fall.

if that is the case, then I know a local dealer that should get reamed... They sell stuff for WAY more than apple.com. They also claim to be "authorized".

apple would kill them if they are purporting to be an "apple authorized reseller". and from what I understand it's extremely hard to be any kind of dealer of new apple hardware without entering into a contract with them. It's why only compusa sold macs (nationally) for the longest time before the apple retail stores, they were the only ones to negotiate terms to apple's satisfaction.

well, "connecting point" claims to be authorized, and they have a very good selection of apple products and accessories. However, they charge more than online prices -- by a lot. A keyboard that is $26 student, $29 retail on apple.com costs $39.99 at conpoi.

Do Apple stores stock custom configurations or just off the shelf basics?

off the shelf, it's possible that they will do some upgrades in-store like RAM etc, but you still have to CTO if you don't like what they offer.
