I'm trying to decide whether I should upgrade glass to something I can use down the road and just deal with not being able to AF (I'm learning mostly landscape/portrait photography) or fork over the extra cash for the AF-S. I'll prolly upgrade the cam someday, but not anytime soon...

    D40x :wtc:

My next camera will probably be a D300 or something comparable...

EDIT: Looking at ebay, that'd only be about a $100-200 hit. Maybe I'll do this :bigok:

    AF-S >> AF

Silent wave is the way to go. Just because its what is required for a D40/40x/60, doesnt mean its inferior or anything.

What are the other benefits? I've handled other cameras with non AF-S lenses, but not enough to notice any major differences.

Silent wave is faster than gear driven AF.

    I don't buy anything except AF-S lenses.

Cept for the 50, because I refuse to pay $450 for a 50mm :ugh:

Get the focal lengths/apertures you want. AF-S is nice but not absolutely necessary.

I got an 85 1.4 bc its a great and unique lens, no AFS is not a huge deal.
