does a 'summo style' deadlift have a mechanical advantage?

clearly you're not lifting the bar as far, so why is it legal? and if legal, why doesn't everyone deadlift this way?

it depends on the person's leverages

the top DLers in the world pull conventional

it varies from person to person, different muscles/form/style/training are involved

Some people lift a lot more with it. I'm pretty sure I do less with it.

Clearly a shorter range of motion doesn't mean the lift is easier. Your thought that shorter range of motion = easier is somewhat flawed.

You have to have the right body type for sumo. It's mostly popular because it's easy to get a lot of support out of a suit when used for sumo deadlifting; not so much for conventional pulling.

I pull a fair amount more conventional, but last time I tried, if equipped I could pull more sumo.

it's legal cuz it's be dumb to outlaw sumo deadlifting when you have tons of ply's of gear, belly benching, etc. it'd make no sense. it makes no sense that in strongman sumo is illegal but you can do anything else to get a weight up.

Sumo is only easier if you are stronger in the right places. My pulls are relatively close, I have done 525 sumo and 565 conventional. If your sumo is allot worse than your conventional or the other way around, you have weaknesses you should probably address..

its so funny watching amateur SM contests like ones ive done, cuz theres always guys there who have never done an event (always a couple of those guys who show up like hey im strong, lets do it)

anyway, they always do crazy shit to do the lifts. pressing off their head, power curling axles instead of doin a regular clean, using their feet on stones, deadlifting to their thighs, resting the bar there, then deadlifting it the rest of the way

but yeah, no sumo.. makes no sense LOL

I get less stress on my glutes when I do sumo, but I can't lift anything near what I can do on conventional's.

I tried them at the start because my glutes were so pussy, but now as I'm quite tall, I don't seem to have the power in that type of lift. I think it does shift more of the work back into the legs.
