When a GSM service provider activates your phone, they lock it into their systems. This prevents people from taking advantage of a free phone promo and then cancelling and going to another provider. Generally, you need to be with your original provider for a certain period of time before they will gleefully unlock your phone.

I take no responsibility for what you do, however there are utilities that can unlock your provider lock. I know you can do it with the 5190/6190 series with a data cable. You should be able to unlock via IrDa with the 8390.

Bear in mind that most Nokias have safeguards installed that will _fry_ your phone firmware if you attempt to hack them too many times. You have been warned.

I suggest you simply call Voicestream or whoever your current provider is and politely ask them if they will unlock your phone ;)
