Found a used 420ex for 100 bucks. The Vivitars are usually 60. Is the 420 worth the extra 40 bucks?

Not necessarily. On lower settings they're about the same and full power the canon is a bit faster, but weaker output. Though the vivitar will eat your batteries faster, but has manual settings where as the canon does not. Kind of toss up really. Power and manual settings vs high-speed sync, ability to use on the shoe or cord and auto zoom head. I think the looking at features is a better indicator as to which to get since recycle times are about the same.

The 420 doesn't have manual controls? This would be used as slave with catcus V2s triggers
