There were so many things messed with Vietnam that switching what rifle was used wouldn't have changed much

No, the M16 had some problems at first but alot of that was due to lack of proper maintenance. FAL or G3 would of been better choices for the environment. Unrestricted bombing is what could of made a difference.

Vastly different terrain types. you can't see where the shots are coming from in the jungle so "spray and pray" is about the only return fire option you have- helps to have automatic capability.

Over an open field with good visibility- gimme an M2 over a 16 any day

Well the early 16's all had auto capability, wasn't untill after Vietnam they went to burst instead of FA.

The M16 has a longer effective range then the M2, M1/2's range is only around 400yds.

Are you guys talking about the M2 as in the M-14? If so then yes, the effective range is about 400 meters, vs the 16's 500 or so. Have you ever tried to line up a man sized target at 500 meters? The front sight post completely covers whatever the hell it is you are aiming at. 300M is standard combat range. I'd take a .308 over 5.56 any day personally.

Also, I know most of you guys keep your black rifles spit and polished, but it's g'damn hard to do in the middle of the desert. It's great in a jungle where the worst you deal with is muddy water most of the time, but the action on an M-14 chews right the hell through sand.

Lastly, the USMC recently went back to the M-14 design for the Designated Marskman program. They accurized the M-14 and added a scope- voila, good for shots from 600-800 at which ranges the 5.56 is highly erratic.

My bad gang... jsut reread the specs on the M2 and was thinking of the M-14 the entire time. My apologies
