Whenever I spend money now, I think about it in terms of the photo gear I want to buy or should have bought with that money.

I had to drop $1k on new tires this morning and as I was paying I thought "Damnit there goes my used 5D."

    Anybody else do this?

I think there was a commercial a while ago (Burger King or McD's or something) that referred to all expenses in terms of a Big Mac (can't remember the exact commercial).

    Anybody else do this?

Damnit I'd much rather have that 5D than new fucking tires

I do this sometimes too, but only when debating car expenses. I spend a lot of money on booze at the bar every month but when I look at my statement, I think, "damn, that's money well spent".

i'd go nuts if I did that.

Instead i've made a new rule: I can only spend what I make through my photography.

So instead of thinking of how the money I spent on other things could have been used for photo, I'm thinking of how I can make more $$ with my photography in order to buy new toys...

    Much more productive for me.

So far i'm about $1800 towards my d700. One more wedding and I'm there.

3 more and i'm at my d700, grip and 14-24.

    :noes:

I guess I only do it for unanticipated expenses. I spend a lot of $ on bars and restaurants too and don't do it for those types of expenses.

But when you are driving to work, blow out a tire, and end up buying all new tires, it makes me wish that it never happened and the money went towards something more fun.

Since I never go out to eat (work in a restaurant, no desire to eat in one) and i don't go to the bars, the only thing i really spend money on is flying home to see my family and girlfriend. do i think about how much it costs and how i could put it towards a new camera? you betcha

The only tires they had in stock were $400/tire (plus about $150 for mounting and balancing). I said no thanks and ordered from TireRack.com.

    Still fucking expensive.

I quantify expendatures in 3 categories now:

    1. Number of Track days or track consumables I could get
    2. Percentage of x watch I could buy if I saved it
    3. What Photo gear I could get.

Not always in that order, although track frequently wins out :o
