Do you "hold" or pull your abs in when you do ab work?

My better half thinks you're supposed to in order to keep abdominal muscles from developing out in a "bulge". I'm not so sure. I tend to hold my breath during the crunch or active phase of ab work, sort of press them out, and exhale after the movement.

Serious business, I know, but I'm curious to see if anyone knows what is "correct".

I'm pretty sure you want to keep the area constricted (not necessarily holding your breath, but sucking your stomach in)

I've never heard of abs developing in a "bulge" by not sucking in...although a beer-belly six pack would be a sight to see

also, if you're doing the exercise right, your abs should be constricted during the concentric phase anyway... and if you're doing static ab work (holds, plank, whatever), the abs should be constricted, so :hsughno:

I focus on actually crunching/contracting the muscles

Instead of just doing a sit-up, leg raise or whatever, actually focus on your abs moving the weight

Yeah, me too - the question is, when you are "actually crunching/contracting the muscles" are they contracted in or out.

Since I tend to hold my breath and effectively push my abdominals out, I wanted to know if that helped, hurt, or didn't matter a damn bit.

I do static holds at the top of a situp sometimes.
