I'm organizing some old pics. I'm wondering if you guys put every pic you take in Lightroom/whatever catalog program or if some don't get cataloged, but you keep the files.

I manage mine without using a program and they all go into specific folders

I just put them into folders of regions or subject types (ie family) then go by dates. Well except for my astrophotograhy stuff. It gets catagorized by field of view (ie using my scope or wide field) then by subject type, specific target name then folders with dates and some info for advanced settings/techniques.

    Is there something easier?

i just dump them in a folder by the day i.e. "july 4th 08" or by subject i.e. "canal park - Night"

i wouldn't recommend that method though... it's completely fucked up.

I let Lightroom do it's thing. It imports them all, and then puts them into folders by the date they were taken. Then I organize them in LR using metadata.

Every picture I've taken is in there... lol Even all the crap test pictures. I'm in the process of going through and deleting the useless ones, but keeping most of them, you never know when it'll come in handy. But the ones that are OOF, not exposed right, shots of the floor, shit like that go.

Everything goes into a folder but the system is very basic.

I have individual folders for year and then subfolders with the month, day, and subject.

So it would be like C:\Pictures\2009\20090302_Crap

Or whatever. I like it like that because it keeps it in chronological time and gives me a quick summary of what it is I took without having to open it up and look at it.
